Youth Climbing Series 2014

Saturday the 25th saw the start to another exciting competition year for our young climbers.

The YCS is the junior climbing world’s spring perennial, giving the kids something to focus on during those long winter months. As the only grass routes competition the BMC run, it is a yearly favourite across the country and designed to be friendly and non-intimidating. It is a great way to get into the world of competitive climbing.

Based over 3 rounds it forms the section of a team that represent their region in a super final at the ECIA in June. For Yorkshire the layout looks a little like this:

Round 1                       25th January – The Leeds Wall

Round 2                       1st March – The Leeds Wall

Round 3                       29th March – Harrogate Climbing Centre

If you missed the first round, don’t worry, you can still enter the others. Entry is on the BMC website.

Although still theoretically in winter, the cold didn’t stop the kids tuning up and climbing hard for Round 1. The Leeds Wall was packed all day with young climbers and their supporters. We also were delighted to see that Christmas hadn’t slowed our own Leeds Climbing Team down, and that those winter training sessions were proven effective. The Team came home with a total of 11 podium finishes, with Jack Ibbertson, Kate Dalton, Georgia Bower, George Stables, Richard Carter and Katie Williams all taking FIRST place in their age categories. If that is not a successful day out I don’t know what is.

This is a fantastic start to the YCS, and to the year, for our Team. The competition for places to represent Yorkshire gets hotter and hotter each year and 2014 is no exception. There are some fantastic climber’s from all the walls in this region and our kids are going to have to work hard to earn their place. But they have put in the best possible start.

The support for these little climbers is also growing. This is unbelievably important if we are to see a continued rise in the standard of climbing from our Yorkshire kids. Thank you to everyone involved, Area Coordinators, route setters, wall managers, coaches and parents. For more details on competitions and youth climbing visit the BMC website.
