Bolt Fund

Introduction and Aims

The Yorkshire Bolt Fund has been operating for 12 years. It was set up in 1995 with the express intention of replacing old bolts, belays, lower-offs and other pieces of rotting fixed protection on the Limestone crags of Yorkshire.

Much of that work has been completed, particularly on the more popular routes on the mainstream crags but there are still many dubious placements that need attention and unfortunately some climbers still place cheap, inferior bolts on new routes, even today.

The work needs to continue and it is an expensive and time consuming business. Good quality stainless steel bolts, either mechanical or resin-fixed cost, on average around £3.50 per placement and a double bolt belay or lower-off with suitable ring or chain fixing can cost anything between £8 and £18. Of course this doesn't account for the cost and maintenance of drills, bits and other necessary tools.

Because of the success of our earlier fund raising efforts and the overall improvement of Yorkshire's sport climbing environment over the last two years or so bolt-fund equipment has been made available to climbers establishing new routes on certain crags and the recent rise in popularity of previously neglected crags such as Giggleswick, Foredale, Trow Gill and the right wing of Blue Scar have generated more interest and more money to the fund. But - it gets spent quickly and there is still much work to be done as gear gets older and decay sets in.
