What
is the Leeds Wall?
The
Leeds Wall was conceived and built by enthusiastic local climbers.
It opened in 1996 and since then has developed as one of the
leading indoor rock climbing centres in the country.
What
do the climbers climb?
Route
Climbing
The
centre boasts a multitude of climbing angles and surfaces from easy
angled slabs to steep overhangs with nearly 200 routes to up to 13
meters high. Routes are
climbed either on a top rope (pre-fixed roped lines) or by lead
climbing (climber protects themselves as they go).
Each route is colour coded and graded. Climbs range in
technical difficulty depending on the size, shape, position and
frequency of the holds. We
offer routes to suit all ages and abilities.
Bouldering
This
type of climbing is probably the fastest growing aspect of the sport.
Without ropes but with landing mats, it involves low level,
powerful, short sequences of moves on vertical and over hanging walls.
We offer a large bouldering area with traverses to more
technical, steeper angled problems.
There is plenty for children and beginners.
Café
The
Wall Rock Café is open 7 days a week throughout the year except over
the summer months when it opens only for the evening.
Food typically ranges from snacks to lunches.
For large groups lunches can be ordered in advance.
What
can we offer your school?
We
can offer your pupils the opportunity to challenge themselves in a
controlled environment. Whether it’s a fun session for your class or something that
is part of a more structured programme we will be able to cater for
your school group. Contact
us and we will tailor a session to suit your needs.
Fun
Sessions
These
can be booked as a one off taster, as an exciting reward or as a block
of fun sessions. The
sessions involve a warm up through climbing games for younger children
that encourage balance and coordination or a more structured warm up
involving stretches and simple conditioning for older children, health
and fitness permitting. The
majority of the fun session would be spent attempting the wall routes
with the groups working together supporting and belaying for each
other whilst being supervised by our instructors.
Structured
Programs
Structured
courses are run by our highly experienced instructors for a minimum of
four weeks. Courses are
often linked to National Curriculum, Duke of Edinburgh, GNVQ or Youth
Award Scheme requirements.
The
courses provide a solid foundation in climbing safety and essential
rope techniques whilst building confidence, trust and teamwork.
On any course the same instructor(s) will be present on each
session to help build a rappor with the students.
The
National Indoor Climbing Achievement Scheme (www.nicas.co.uk)
is
a UK wide scheme
designed to introduce new and young climbers to climbing on artificial
climbing walls. The awards focus on skill development and safety and
require the gaining of logged experience for completion. They
are open to climbers of all ages and abilities though the higher levels
also include a performance element to promote personal development.
If
you are interested in using the scheme for yourself or your group
contact Matt Birch at matt.birch@theleedswall.co.uk
or contact Bookings on 0113 2341554.
Aims of
the scheme:
- to
develop climbing skills and improve levels of ability
- to
learn climbing rope-work and how to use equipment safely
- to
develop risk assessment and management skills in the sport
- to
work as a team, communicate with, and trust a climbing partner
- to
develop an understanding of the sport, it’s history and future
challenges
- to
provide a record of personal achievement
- to
point the way to further challenges in climbing beyond the scheme
The
awards aim to accredit achievement in climbing and to provide a
structure for learning best practice in the sport in a series of five
awards of increasing technical skill.
1.
Foundation Climber
– an entry level aimed at novices that recognises their ability to
climb safely under supervision
2.
Top Rope Climber
–aimed at promoting good practice in climbing and bouldering
unsupervised on an artificial wall
3.
Technical Climber
– a more advanced top roping and bouldering level that focuses on
developing technique and movement skills
4.
Lead Climber
- concentrates on the skills required to both lead climb and belay a
lead climber
5.
Advanced Climber
– the top level that focuses on improving performance, a deeper
understanding of climbing systems and the wider world of climbing
The
Instructors
All
our instructors are friendly and approachable and are highly experienced
at working with young people of all abilities.
All are fully qualified climbing instructors as recommended by
the Mountain Leader Training Boards and Association of British Climbing
Walls and are First Aid Trained.
The
instructors are also put through a thorough induction programme before
working for The Leeds Wall and are vetted through the Criminal Records
Bureau (CRB). The Leeds
Wall child protection policy is available on request.
Standard
School Sessions
Standard
group climbing sessions using our instructors are available for groups
of 6 – 24 people in 1, 1.5 and 2 hour time durations.

What
are the long term options for our students?
Children
and young people that have attended a single climbing session are
welcome to visit the wall over the school breaks, where we offer Holiday
Climbing Club sessions at the centre and out on the crag.
Children
and young adults under 17 that have received 4 or more hours of tuition
are given the opportunity to join the Lizards Climbing Club that meet
every weekend. For those
between the ages of 14 to 18 who have received a minimum of 12 climbing
sessions under instruction there is the opportunity to undertake a
competence assessment allowing them if successful to become junior
members and climb unsupervised at the centre.
For
our regularly visiting schools we host an annual Inter- Schools Climbing
Competition. The
competition is a great opportunity for your pupils to meet other young
climbers and take part in a fun competition while representing their
school. The competition
normally includes 12 – 15 schools from the Yorkshire area.
